Understanding coin and banknote grades

What grades like MS65, AU53 or PR69DCAM mean, and how to verify a certified coin.

Tap the ⓘ

Next to any grade you'll see a small ⓘ. Tap it for a plain-language explanation: what the grade means, where it sits on the 1 to 70 scale, and what the letters after it mean.

The basics

  • 1 to 70 scale: higher is better. 70 is a perfect coin.

  • MS (Mint State) 60 to 70: never circulated.

  • AU (About Uncirculated) 50 to 58: tiny traces of wear.

  • XF/EF, VF, F, VG, G: increasing wear.

  • PR / PF (Proof): specially struck for collectors.

  • Suffixes: RD/RB/BN (copper color), DCAM (deep cameo), FB (full bands), EPQ (notes) and more.

Certified vs raw

  • Certified coins are graded and sealed by PCGS, NGC, ANACS or CACG. Banknotes are usually graded by PMG. Kilito reads the grade and cert straight from the label.

  • Raw coins aren't graded by a service. Kilito's AI doesn't guess a grade for raw coins; it gives a value range for the likely condition instead. A grade you type yourself shows with a small raw tag, and exports list it as raw.

  • CAC: Kilito tells a CAC sticker on a PCGS or NGC slab apart from a coin graded in a CACG holder.

Verify a cert

On items with a cert number, tap ✓ Verify on PCGS, NGC or PMG. Kilito copies the cert number for you in case the site asks for it.
